

When continuing the Age of Empires series, Ensemble Studios was left with a predicament considering which era of history to focus on. However, experiments to create an intuitive RTS control scheme for consoles were found unsatisfactory, and the project shifted back to the PC. It began life as a console RTS using the same BANG! Engine used by Ensemble Studios since Age of Mythology.

Age of Empires Classic began development in 2005, shortly after the completion of Age of Empires III.
